The World Tourism Day (WTD) is internationally commemorated every September 27 as a way of bringing people together to reflect on the importance and benefits that arise from tourism. The event is promoted annually by the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).

Under the theme,“ Tourism and the Digital Transformation” The importance of digital technologies in tourism, providing opportunities for innovation and preparing the sector for the future of work, is at the centre of World Tourism Day 2018, to be celebrated in Budapest, Hungary (27 September 2018).

Tourism is today the 3rd largest export industry in the world after chemicals and fuels. It brings hope, prosperity and understanding to so many lives and livelihoods all over the world.

 

In Uganda, tourism on average contributes $1.4 billion approximately 7% of GDP. Employment in the sector is still one of the fastest growing with over one million people working in tourism-related businesses.

This year’s major celebrations will be held at the Source of River Nile in Jinja under the same theme, with a month-long activities starting from 6th – 27th September 2018, providing an opportunity to different tourism stakeholders and the country at large to recognize and embrace the importance of digital technologies in tourism.

This year’s event will be flagged off with: –

  • Uganda Hotels and Restaurants Expo from 6th – 8th September at Hotel Africana,
  • Tourism forums and workshops,
  • Smart Youth Conference
  • Sports gala at MUBS and dinner,
  • Tulambule – Busoga region, a domestic tourism promotion campaign aimed at encouraging Ugandans to tour places around Uganda
  • Cultural and trade exhibition
  • Tourism Night and,
  • World Tourism celebrations (Climax) on Thursday 27th September at the Source of River Nile, in Jinja.

 

Jinja District just 70km from Kampala City is located at the confluence of Lake Victoria and the source of River Nile bordering the Districts of Mukono and Kayunga to the west, Mayuge and Iganga to the East and Kamuli to the north, with a population of about 392,000 people. It’s the second most important capital city of Uganda. The town was the industrial heart of the country in the early 1960s and 1970s occupying an area of 767.7 Km2.
