Gorilla tours in Uganda in Bwindi Impenetrable National park – the park is a tropical Afro-montane forest that sits on mountain ranges. These run along the border of Uganda and D.R.C in the Southwestern pocket of Uganda. The name ‘Bwindi’ literally means ‘impenetrable’ in local dialect. Further, when you translate, it reads ‘ImpenetrableImpenetrable forest National Park’.However, we agree with the ones who named it so because Bwindi is a real impenetrable deal!

History and coverage of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

This rain forest was designated as a national park in 1991. And covers a total land area of 331km2. The park stands at an elevation between 1,190 – 2,607 meters above sea level. On the same note, its highest point is Rwamunyonyi hill.

Climate of Bwindi forest

Bwindi unquestionably experiences rain throughout the year. This is in light of the fact of its equatorial nature. Important to realize, the annual rainfall stands between 1400mm – 1900mm millimeters. Its mean annual temperatures vary between 70c – 15 0 c / 450f – 590f. The park experiences extreme wet conditions between March – April annually.

Bwindi has a rugged terrain because it lies along the fringe of the Western rift valley. The underneath is composed of different sets of rocks like granite, schist, quartz, quartzite among others. In 1994, the park was designated a UNESCO world heritage site. There is no doubt that the Bwindi forest is one of the remaining and most conserved rain forests in Africa.

The ecosystem roles of Gorilla land

The park plays a significant role in water catchment. Besides, it has a dense concentration of water channels and many rivers. These include; Lvi, Ishasha, Munyaga, Ntegyere, and Ihihizo run draining through to flow into Lake Edward.

The park shelters 120 mammal species which include rare monkeys, forest elephants, leopards, chimps, bats, and forest hogs among others. Moreover, it’s home to 200 butterfly species, 347 or so many bird species. Some 27 frog species also thrill therein.

Bwindi is of course globally known for gorilla habituation and trekking. These activities particularly gorilla trekking became popular by 1992 in the park. Gorilla trekking encounters in Bwindi– the park has four trekking regions; Rushaga, Ruhija, Buhoma, and Nkuringo.

Tourist activities in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park;

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National park – Secure a trekking permit in advance. We encourage you to travel during the low peak months. Besides, the supply of trekking permit gets shortened in the peak season months. On the positive side, in this season, hotels charge low prices. Our gorilla trekking permit is sold cheaply at $700. The price discount of $800 is extended to you. Moreover, other destinations like Rwanda sell their trekking permit which is sold at $1500.

Gorilla habituation in Bwindi Impenetrable National park – you secure your gorilla habituation permit in advance. We encourage your visit during low season months (March – April). In Bwindi Impenetrable forest, gorilla habituation takes place in the Nkuringo sector. Therefore, you spend a magical 4 hours with the Nkuringo gorilla family.

Bird Watching in Bwindi forest – Bwindi forest has over 377 different bird species. You stand a great opportunity of exploring most of the forest endemics.

Buhoma Village / Community walks in Bwindi Forest – you can spare time to enjoy a guided community walk which usually starts at Buhoma Community Rest Camp. You can still do mountain biking or horseback riding while in the Buhoma sector.
