Detailed itinerary of 15 Days Classic Birding Tour in Uganda

Day 1 of the 15 Days Classic Birding Tour in Uganda:

Birding in Mabamba Swamp

Our driver picks you up after breakfast from Entebbe. And then drives you to Mabamba bay on Lake Victoria. The swamp indeed offers opportunity to see lots of swamp specialists, for instance; the shoebill.

The swamp also protects other good bird species that includes the swamp fly catcher, and African marsh harrier. Overall the papyrus Gonolek, African Pygmy Goose, White-backed Duck, black headed weaver, and Long Toed plover are visible.

At last track for the whistling duck, gross beak weaver, blue swallow, and Lesser Jacana. Also check out for the black kite, Blue Swallow, Fan Tailed Widow Bird, Red Chested Sunbird, and Yellow Billed Duck. After lunch, drive to Lake Mburo with a lunch stop over enroute.

Day 2 of Classic Birding Tour in Uganda:

Salt lick + birding in Rubanga forest

The day begins early with early morning breakfast. And soon our birding/ game drive in the saltlick begins. Later also starts the guided walk in Rubanga forest. Certainly its the search for the red faced barbet, grey crowned crane, African Fin foot, Spot-flanked barbet, and Brown Chested Plover.

Lets track also for White Winged Warbler, brown chested lap wing, Papyrus Yellow Warbler, and Nubian wood pecker. We extensively track for the Crested Barbet, Red shouldered cuckoo shrike, Carruthers’ and Tabora Cisticola.

There are son many birds to see not o mention the Papyrus Gonolek, Northern Brown Throated Weaver, brown parrot, and Scaly-throated Honey guide. Altogether the Emerald-spotted Wood Dove, Coqui Francolin, green wood hoopoe and many more are visible.

Day 3 & 4 of Classic Birding Tour in Uganda:

Transfer to Mgahinga National Park + birding on the gorge and farm trails.

After breakfast you leave for Mgahinga national park via Kabale of course birding en-route. On arrival, check into your lodge. During the time spent here be on the lookout for Albertine rift endemics.

Go birding on the farm trail and the gorge trails of Mgahinga national park. Track for birds like; the Archer’s Robin-chat, Handsome Francolin, scarlet tufted sunbirds, and Dusky Turtle Dove. Also track for the Rwenzori Turaco, western green tinker bird, Kivu Ground Thrush, olive pigeon, and Lagden’s Bush-Shrike.

Finally don’t missout the stripe breasted tit, Malachite Sunbird, Rwenzori Nightjar, and Rwenzori Double. The Collared Sunbird, Cinnamon Bracken Warbler, Dusky and Shelley’s Crimsonwing, and dusky turtle dove, also fly around.

Day 5 of Classic Birding Tour in Uganda:

Echuya Forest.

The forest hosts over 150 bird species with 18 of these being endemic to the reserve. Set off for Echuya forest with your picnic lunch after breakfast at your lodge.

Look out for species like; the mountain masked Apalis, Grauer’s warbler, Many-coloured bush shrike, Mountain Hill Babbler, and Dwarf honey guide.

Without boubt the Doherty’s, Ludher’s Bush-Shrike, Northern Double Collared Sunbird, Lagden’s bush shrike, and Black Faced Rufous Warbler are visible.

Day 6 & 7 of Classic Birding Tour in Uganda:

Mubwindi swamp and school trail

On these two days you go birding in Bwindi impenetrable forest. we track for birds specifically in the Mubwindi swamp and the school trail. It’s advisable to wear light rain gear and sturdy walking shoes. Bwindi has a slippery terrain sometimes.

Look out for species such as; fine banded wood pecker, chest nut throated Apalis, African Green Broadbill, and bar tailed trogon. In addition, track for the Strange Weaver, Yellow- Eyed Black Flycatcher, white bellied Robin chat, and Purple Breasted Sunbird. Lastly for the day, check for the Regal Sunbird, Olive Pigeon, Rwenzori Batis, Rwenzori Nightjar and Grauer’s Warbler.

Day 8 & 9 of Classic Birding Tour in Uganda:

Water fall trail, camp area and Munyaga trail

Transfer to the Buhoma sector of Bwindi forest. You spend three days birding along the waterfall trail, munyaga trail and camp area. Look out for the Bronze napped pigeon, Chapin’s flycatcher, Mountain Illadopses, black-billed weaver, dusky tit, and strange weaver.

The Stripe Breasted Tit, Black Bee-eater, White Bellied Robin-Chat, Brown Caped Weaver and Willcock’s honeyguide are visible. Therefore carry a camera to capture stunning photos of the dwarf Honeyguide, Kivu ground thrush, and Dusky cuckoo. And of course, the read throated athlete, Forest Ground Thrush, Red Fronted Antpecker, Short-Tailed Warbler, Red-Faced and Woodland Warbler.

Day 10 of Classic Birding Tour in Uganda:

Birding in Ishasha sector

Leave Bwindi after breakfast and transfer to the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth national park. 
You surely arrive at lunchtime, and definitely check into your lodge.

Moreover have lunch then join the afternoon birding drive to track for several birds. These include the Brown Chested Plover, Wattled starling, Diederick’s Cuckoo, Ruppel’s Griffon vulture, and Bateleur.

Additionally glance at the White Backed vulture, Black Rumped Buttonquail, and Lappet Faced Vultures. Meanwhile, the Violet Backed Starlings and lots of wildlife like the tree-climbing lion, elephants, warthogs are visible during the drive.

Day 11 & 12 of Classic Birding Tour in Uganda:

Ishasha plains, Mweya peninsular, Kasenyi plains, birding boat ride Kazinga channel

Join a morning drive to the Ishasha plains after breakfast. We have gone for another birding experience in the Ishasha plains. There is a high possibility of sighting the Western-banded eagle, White-back vulture, and Martial Eagle. Further, the Brown Snake-Eagle, Lappet-faced eagle, and Ruppell’s Griffon Vulture are sighted. From here, transfer to Mweya peninsular after lunch.

Go birding in the Kasenyi plains on Day 16 followed by a boat ride on Kazinga channel. Expect to see species like Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl, African fish eagle, Plain-backed and Grassland Pipit. Further more the African Reed, Wing-snapping cisticola, Temminck’s Courser, Eurasian Reed and Sedge Warblers are visible.

As well, check out for the Broad-tailed Warblers, Papyrus Gonolek, White-winged butter quail, African Skimmer, and Greater Swamp. Importantly still, look out for the Lesser Swamp, Common Button-quail, Black-crowned Tchagra, Winding, and Stout.

Finally, trace for the Croaking, Zitting Cisticola, African Crake, Collared Pratincole, Grey-headed gull, and Common Black-headed Gull, among others.

Day 13 & 14 of Classic Birding Tour in Uganda:

Spot lit night drive +shoe bill boat ride on Lake Albert +hot spring visit

Drive to Semliki national park after breakfast. Check into your lodge on arrival and relax or freshen up. Additonally at night, enjoy a guided spot lit game drive to view night bird and wildlife. later on, join the boat ride on Lake Albert to view the shoe bill and lots of other birds.

This game drive unveils sightings of birds such as; the Capuchin Babbler, White-thighed horn bill, and White-bellied Kingfisher. Other birds such as the Black Dwarf, Black-casqued Wattled hornbill, and Zenker’s Honey guide are also spotted. In addition, the African Piculet, , Spotted honey guide, Yellow-throated Cuckoo, Yellow-throated Nicatoer, and Red-billed Dwarf hornbill are seen.

Furthermore, the Long-tailed Hawk, Lyre-tailed honey guide, Icterine Greenbul, Forest Scrub Robin, and Nkurengu Rail are seen. Therefore carry your binoculars to see more birds like the Shining-blue king fisher, Oberlaender’s Ground Thrush, and Red-billed Helmet-shrike.

You have probably seen a majority of birds for example; the Swamp-palm Bulbul, Orange-tufted Sunbird, and not to mention, the White-crested, and Piping Hornbills. Return to the lodge to unwind from the days’s exhaustion.

Day 15 of Classic Birding Tour in Uganda:

Transfer to Kampala

Your birding adventure tour in Uganda has finally come to its end. And obviously today, we drive back to Kampala city for optional shopping. After which, we head on to Entebbe Airport to catch your home flight.
